๐ The Low Level Librarian Recommends: 10 Languages for Absolute Beginners
Welcome, new library member! Below is the Beginner Shelf, ten languages ranked by how good a first checkout they are. Every number on this page comes from a cited public source, and every resource is free.
#1 Python
The most-checked-out book in the learner stacks: top language among people learning to code in the 2025 Stack Overflow survey and #1 on TIOBE. Readable syntax means you spend time on ideas, not punctuation.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 71.8% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #1 (19.23%)
๐ Free first checkout: The official Python Tutorial
#2 JavaScript
Runs in the browser you already have, so your first program needs no installs. Pair it with HTML/CSS, the #2 shelf for learners in the 2025 survey.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 62.8% of learners (HTML/CSS: 66.6%) ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #6 (2.77%)
๐ Free first checkout: MDN: Learn web development
#3 Scratch
The picture-book section: drag-and-drop blocks teach loops, events and variables with zero typos. Made by the MIT Media Lab and free in the browser. Ranked this high for the very youngest readers and total newcomers.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): Not listed in the survey ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #15 (0.97%)
๐ Free first checkout: Scratch (MIT)
#4 C
The Low Level Library's house favorite. Harder than the books above, but it shows you what memory and pointers really are. Learners pick it far more often than professionals (48% vs. 17.6% in the 2025 survey).
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 48% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #2 (11.33%)
๐ Free first checkout: Harvard CS50x (starts in C)
#5 Java
A sturdy reference text: strict types and clear structure, and it shows up in many school curricula. More verbose to start with, but the error messages keep you honest.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 40.8% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #4 (8.41%)
๐ Free first checkout: dev.java Learn (Oracle)
#6 SQL
The card catalog itself. It's small and declarative, and you can query real data within an hour. It doesn't build apps alone, so it sits mid-shelf as a perfect second language.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 45.4% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #9 (1.97%)
๐ Free first checkout: SQLBolt interactive lessons
#7 C#
Friendly modern syntax with good tooling, and it's the scripting language of the Unity game engine. TIOBE named it Programming Language of the Year for 2025.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 23.1% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #5 (3.79%)
๐ Free first checkout: Microsoft: A tour of C#
#8 TypeScript
JavaScript with labels on every shelf. GitHub's Octoverse 2025 reports it became the most used language on GitHub in August 2025. Best checked out after a little JavaScript.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 31.9% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #38 (0.41%)
๐ Free first checkout: TypeScript for the New Programmer
#9 Go
A slim volume: very few keywords, one standard formatter, and an interactive in-browser tour. A gentle step toward systems programming.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 13.1% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #11 (1.39%)
๐ Free first checkout: A Tour of Go
#10 Lua
A pocket paperback: a tiny language designed to be embedded in other programs, and widely used for game scripting and mods. The official reference manual is short enough to read in a weekend.
Stack Overflow 2025 (learning to code, "used extensively"): 15% of learners ยท TIOBE Oct 2026: #35 (0.44%)
๐ Free first checkout: Programming in Lua (1st ed., free online)
๐๏ธ How the shelf was arranged (method)
This is an editorial ranking by The Low Level Librarian, not a statistical index. It weighs (1) how many people learning to code use each language, from the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey "learning to code" respondents; (2) broad popularity from the TIOBE Index for October 2026; (3) GitHub Octoverse 2025 trends; and (4) the librarian's judgment of how gentle the setup and syntax are, and how good the free official beginner material is. Popularity alone doesn't set the order. Scratch is ranked high for gentleness even though the survey doesn't list it, and TypeScript sits lower because it builds on JavaScript. Stats were checked on October 13, 2026.
